Agreement to Establish a Specialized Potato Seed Facility in Karak

Khaberni - Dr. Saeb Abdel Halim Al-Khreisat, the Minister of Agriculture, signed an agreement to establish a specialized factory for packing, sorting, packaging, and cooling potato seeds in Hussein Bin Abdullah II Industrial City in Karak Governorate with the Technical Company for Potato Seed Production, as part of agreements for the Food Industries Stimulus Project in industrial cities, developmental cities, and municipalities.

Al-Khreisat pointed out that the project represents a strategic step towards achieving self-sufficiency in potato seeds, as the Kingdom currently imports all its seed needs from European countries, at a cost exceeding 7 million dinars annually.

The project aims to establish Jordan as a regional hub for potato seed production, benefiting from its climatic and epidemiological advantages, which provide a suitable environment for producing seeds with global specifications, in line with the economic modernization vision and the ministry's plan to support agricultural industries and achieve sustainable economic development. The project is expected to create 26 job opportunities, in addition to enhancing the national food security system and supporting investment in value-added agricultural industries.

On its part, the Technical Company will produce potato seeds using the latest agricultural technologies, including tissue culture and aeroponics, as part of a plan targeting to meet the Jordanian market's seed needs by the second half of 2027, which will enhance the competitiveness of the Jordanian agricultural sector and help reduce production costs for farmers.
