Khaberni - The American president Donald Trump criticized the resigned British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, considering his policies in the fields of energy and immigration caused him significant political damage, which contributed to weakening his position within the Labour Party.
Trump told reporters at the White House last Monday that he considers Starmer a "nice man", but accused him of mismanaging the energy profile by not utilizing the oil and gas resources in the North Sea, and focusing on wind energy projects.
He added that the United Kingdom imports a large part of its energy needs from Norway, despite having a larger share of North Sea resources, considering that London's reluctance to utilize those resources is due to environmental considerations.
Iran war strained the relationship
The U.S. president also noted that Starmer was not cooperative enough with the United States on issues related to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the war on Iran, pointing out a previous disagreement between the two sides regarding the use of the British Akrotiri base in Cyprus during the American-Israeli war on Iran.
Trump stated that the British Prime Minister initially had reservations about using the base before he later backtracked, adding that this stance "greatly damaged him". He continued: "He had two problems: energy and immigration, and in these files, he caused great harm to himself."
At the same time, Trump expressed his wishes for Starmer’s success, saying he was "somewhat a friend", this was after hours of Starmer announcing his intention to resign from the leadership of the Labour Party.
Starmer announced last Monday that he would step down as the party leader after months of internal pressure, and his popularity declined following disappointing results the party achieved in recent local and regional elections.
It is expected that the veteran Labour politician Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, will succeed him, a move that might position Britain to face its seventh prime minister within a single decade.
Last Sunday, the American president predicted that Starmer would step down from his position under severe pressure.
Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social" that "Starmer will resign from the position of Prime Minister", adding that he "failed miserably in two very important issues, which are immigration and energy".
