Khaberni - The Qatari State Minister for Energy, Engineer Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, announced that the Ras Laffan factory accident resulted in the death of 13 workers and injured 66 others, emphasizing that the incident was an accident and not an act of aggression or sabotage.
At a press conference today, he denied any environmental risks resulting from the incident, confirming that the authorities had full control over the factory, and that there is no ongoing danger at the site.
The State Minister for Energy mentioned that the incident will not affect exports, explaining that the damaged project is a local one and is not linked to export capacities. He also reassured Qatar's ability to cover its energy needs, with no concerns in that regard.
He stated that work is currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion, noting that the incident has not affected the export capabilities, and that there are always additional quantities as reserves, which enables covering current and future needs once repairs are completed.
The State Minister for Energy emphasized that the current priority is focused on the injured, by monitoring their treatment and providing the necessary care, mentioning that a full investigation and fact-finding will be conducted to determine the circumstances of the incident.
He added that the factory will be closed during the investigation period and the evaluation of damages, explaining that these measures will take some time, after which a correction plan will be put in place and announced at an appropriate time.
Al-Kaabi explained that it is difficult at this time to predict when the factory will resume operations, confirming that this will be announced after completing the fact-finding and when full information is available.
The Qatari Ministry of Interior had announced an internal explosion at one of the factories in the Ras Laffan Industrial Area last night, Sunday.
