Jordan A Museum Without Walls
الكاتب: الدكتور زيد أحمد المحيسن

The concept of tourism is often simplified in narrow views that do not reflect its reality and its civilizational and cultural role, while tourism in its essence is a journey of discovering humanity, history, place, and identity. A tourist does not leave their homeland and travel thousands of kilometers in search of a duplicated version of what they see daily in their country, but rather they seek uniqueness, distinction, and a different experience that provides a deeper understanding of peoples and civilizations. This highlights the importance of correcting the concept of tourism and redirecting it towards emphasizing national identity and authentic culture instead of succumbing to imported modes that add nothing to the national image or the visitor's experience.
Jordan is one of the countries with exceptional and diverse tourism elements, and it can rightfully be described as a "museum without walls." It is a land where civilizations have followed one another for thousands of years, leaving distinct marks in the archaeological cities and historical sites that narrate the human story since the dawn of history. At the same time, Jordan embraces a significant religious heritage that has made it a destination for religious tourism from around the world, with sites of deep spiritual and historical significance entrenched in the consciousness of followers of different religions.
Tourism in Jordan is not limited to history and religion alone; it extends to medical and wellness tourism that benefits from unique natural resources, to conference and seminar tourism that makes the kingdom a hub for regional and international meetings, and includes environmental tourism that showcases the beauty and diversity of nature among deserts, mountains, valleys, and nature reserves. Alongside this, cultural tourism is evident in the folk traditions, arts, literature, customs, and practices that form an integral part of the Jordanian community's identity, as well as in the tourism of festivals and artistic and heritage events that allow visitors to experience the local culture vividly and directly.
The tourism map also includes entertainment and sport tourism, adventure tourism, rural trips, food, and shopping tourism, all of which complete the tourism experience and provide the visitor with a variety of options that suit their different interests. However, the success of all these types does not come from imitating others or replicating foreign models that are alien to the community, but rather by presenting Jordan as it is; with its rich history, authentic culture, a people known for their generosity and valor, and hospitality, and social values that have shaped its character over the centuries.
True tourism is not an artificial beautification of reality, but a sincere presentation of the place's identity and the community's message. The tourist who visits Jordan wants to see Jordan itself, not an image borrowed from other cultures. They want to learn about the Jordanian people and their habits, traditions, popular cuisine, arts, heritage, and historical tales, and to touch the authenticity and uniqueness of the place. Thus, the primary task of tourism work is to highlight this identity, preserve it, and present it to the world confidently and proudly, because what truly distinguishes Jordan is not what it resembles, but what it uniquely offers. Hence, Jordan remains a museum without walls, open to history, civilization, nature, and humanity, carrying a cultural and human message that deserves to be told to the world with honesty and pride.
