Khaberni - Jordan witnessed, at dawn on Sunday, the execution of death penalties against six convicts involved in terrorism and drug cases, after the rulings against them became final and all constitutional and legal procedures were completed. This step marks the first of its kind since 2017, when the kingdom carried out death penalties against 15 convicts in criminal and terrorism-related cases.
Decisions worth millions of dinars and decisive messages from the government in Zarqa
The executions were carried out at a time when the government confirmed that there are more than 100 people sentenced to death in Jordanian prisons, noting that the executions would proceed sequentially according to the law after completing all stages of litigation.
How were the death penalties executed inside Swaqa prison?
The executions were carried out just before dawn prayers inside the Swaqa Rehabilitation and Reform Centre, in the presence of the Attorney General of the State Security Court, the administrative governor, the center's director, a forensic doctor, and a delegate from the General Iftaa Department, following the legally approved procedures.
According to informed sources, the convicts requested to drink water and perform prayer before carrying out the penalty, while a delegate from the Iftaa Department recited the Shahada to them and urged them to seek forgiveness and repentance.
The official authorities confirmed that the executions were carried out under the supervision of the Attorney General of the State Security Court and in accordance with Article 359 of the Criminal Procedure Law, after completing all legal and constitutional requirements.
The Minister of Government Communications and the official spokesperson for the government, Mohammed Al-Momani, stated that the execution of these rulings represents the implementation of justice and fairness to the souls of the martyrs who were killed while performing their duty in defending Jordan’s security and stability, stressing that the final judicial rulings will be implemented sequentially according to the law.
The government aims to expand the death penalty and reveals details of the cases
Concurrently with the executions, Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan announced a governmental shift towards amending legislations to broaden the scope of implementing the death penalty, especially against major drug dealers and smugglers linked to foreign gangs.
Hassan emphasized during a cabinet meeting in Zarqa that implementing the penalty carries a clear message to everyone who assaults members of the armed forces and security agencies, asserting that the state will not tolerate crimes that target the security of the nation and its security personnel.
Details of the cases of the convicts
As announced by Al-Momani, the executed rulings included convicts in the terrorist cell case of Al-Salt that occurred in 2018 and resulted in several security personnel martyred, as well as a convict in the case related to the martyrdom of Brigadier General Abdul Razaq Al-Dalabih in 2022.
The executions also included three convicts in drug cases and resisting security personnel during raid operations, which resulted in several security personnel martyred while performing their duty.
These developments come in the context of an official direction towards strengthening the penalties associated with terrorism, drug trafficking, and assaults on security personnel, with the government confirming the continued implementation of final judicial rulings according to the provisions of the law.
