Khaberni - Doctors indicate that apricots are a delicious and beneficial fruit for the body's health, but their content of certain substances may cause problems in the digestive system. In addition, excessive consumption increases blood sugar levels.
Russian nutritionist Yelena Solamatina warned that eating apricots may not be suitable in some cases, explaining that it is advisable to reduce consumption or avoid it for some people depending on their health condition.
She mentioned that apricots, like other fruits, contain fibers and substances that may cause irritation in the digestive system, which could lead to discomfort or cause diarrhea and bloating.
She added that the organic acids in apricots may exacerbate irritation for people who suffer from damage to the mucous membrane of the stomach, or from conditions such as gastritis, ulcers, and colitis. She pointed out that the increased acidity of apricots intensifies their irritating effect, while sweeter varieties are less acidic but contain higher sugar levels.
On her part, gastroenterologist Nadezhda Chernyshova explained that consuming apricots with cold water could also lead to digestive disturbances including diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
According to her recommendations, the appropriate daily amount for a healthy person should not exceed 200 grams (about 4 to 6 large pieces), as overconsumption can cause digestive disorders or a sharp rise in blood sugar levels, making diabetic patients more susceptible to risks when consumed in large quantities.
Solamatina also mentioned that apricots contain fructose, which is metabolized in the liver and may contribute to an increase in liver fat accumulation. Moreover, it does not reduce the feeling of hunger and may stimulate appetite. It also contains beta-carotene, which, when consumed excessively, may cause disturbances in thyroid gland functions.
She also warned against consuming apricot kernels, as they contain amygdalin, which turns into toxic hydrocyanic acid in the body, emphasizing the need for extreme caution, especially for people with kidney issues.
Dr. Chernyshova also noted that apricots may cause allergic reactions in some people, including itching, runny nose, watery eyes, and skin rash, and in severe cases, may lead to Quincke's edema or anaphylactic shock, which require urgent medical intervention.
