The World Bank: A "satisfactory" progress for the Electricity Efficiency and Supply Reliability program in Jordan

Khaberni - The "Electricity Sector Efficiency and Supply Reliability" program in Jordan, funded by a half-billion-dollar loan from the World Bank, achieved additional savings and revenues for the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) totaling 159.92 million dinars as of the end of April 2026, exceeding the final target of 95 million dinars set for the end of 2027, according to Al-Mamlaka.

According to the "Implementation Status and Results" report issued by the World Bank, the program consists of two loans valued at $250 million each, the first approved in March 2023 and the second as additional financing in April 2025, with the program execution extending up to February 29, 2028.

The results also showed the continued contribution of renewable energy at 27% of the electricity mix, surpassing the minimum target of 26%, while the report confirmed that electricity production from renewable energy stations connected to the transmission network is still above the targeted level.

In the service reliability index, the number of outages per customer dropped to 0.23 outages compared to 0.34 outages at the baseline recorded at the end of 2022, against a final target that calls for not exceeding 0.5 outages per customer.

In the area of energy efficiency, the report highlighted the implementation of energy efficiency measures in five government buildings by the end of 2025, against a target of 20 buildings by the end of 2027.

Moreover, the electricity production from renewable energy sources connected to the transmission grid reached 2072 gigawatt hours between January and June 2025, compared with an annual target of no less than 2530 gigawatt hours by 2027, while the World Bank considered the indicator to be on track as planned.

The World Bank affirmed that the progress towards achieving the program's goals and the progress in implementation are still at a "satisfactory" level, with the continued implementation of financial, regulatory, and institutional reforms aimed at improving the efficiency, reliability, and financial sustainability of the electricity sector and enhancing institutional governance.
