Khaberni - On Thursday, the city of Paris granted honorary citizenship to Palestinian civilians and journalists, a step long demanded by part of the left-wing majority in the French capital's council.
The socialist mayor of the capital, Emmanuel Grégoire, said in front of the Paris city council, in the presence of the Palestinian ambassador Hala Abu Hasira, that «honorary citizenship is not just a symbol, it is a commitment to peace. We are extending our hand to an entire people».
He added: «Recognizing the suffering of the Palestinian people does not erase the suffering of the Israeli people,» while politicians from the right criticize his stance as «unbalanced,» which in their opinion excludes the Israeli victims of the conflict.
