Dr. Moataz Abu Awad, representative of the Jordanian National Union Party and member of the General Secretariat, presented a view of the new Local Administration Bill in front of the relevant parliamentary committee, emphasizing the importance of developing local administration, enhancing governance, digitization, and local investment, while preserving the essence of decentralization and public participation.
Abu Awad highlighted the necessity of maintaining direct public representation in the provincial councils, enhancing the oversight tools of elected councils, curbing the dominance of administrative centralization, and ensuring actual powers are not transferred to appointed entities at the expense of elected bodies.
He also called for reviewing the restrictions imposed on the right to run for office, enhancing the role of political parties in local administration, in alignment with the political modernization project, confirming that what is required is to develop the bill and achieve a balance between administrative efficiency and democratic representation that serves sustainable local development. Several representatives of Jordanian parties participated in the session.
