German grant of 127 million euros to support the national carrier project

Khaberni - Raed Abu Saoud, the Minister of Water and Irrigation, and Matthias Rosen, the director of the German Development Bank office, signed on Thursday a separate agreement tied to the grant and existing project agreements for the national carrier, which had previously been arranged to start implementation of the grant and confirm ongoing cooperation for many years and the support of the German side for the water sector with the aim of improving water security.

The German contribution to the national carrier project includes a grant of 102 million euros from the Federal German Government through the German Development Bank, plus 25 million euros through a debt swap agreement, totaling 127 million euros.

The contribution is one of the grants provided to the project, reflecting the strong and continuous German support for the water sector in Jordan amidst increasing demand and challenges related to climate change.

The national carrier project, which is being implemented through a public-private partnership system, aims to supply Jordan with about 300 million cubic meters of additional drinking water annually from the year 2030.

The project includes the construction of a large desalination plant on the Red Sea, laying about 450 kilometers of transmission lines to deliver desalinated water to the Greater Amman area and other regions, in addition to installing photovoltaic solar energy systems to cover part of the project's energy needs from renewable sources and by integrating renewable energy, the project aims to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to achieving Jordan's goals in the fields of climate and the transition to clean energy.

The national carrier project is one of the fundamental pillars in Jordan's long-term water strategy, and it is expected to significantly enhance the reliability and resilience of water supplies for households, the industrial sector, and agriculture by mobilizing financing from donor institutions alongside substantial international support. The project represents a pioneering model of innovative financing for infrastructure and international cooperation in the field of water management able to adapt to climate change.
