Why do doctors consider knowing your blood type essential

Khaberni - Knowing your blood type is among the important health information that could contribute to saving lives in emergencies or various medical procedures, however, estimates suggest that one-third of Americans do not know their blood type.

Blood type can be determined in several ways, most notably by reviewing medical records, where it is often identified during pregnancy tests, surgeries, or previous medical care, and may be available through electronic patient portals or hospitals.

It can also be determined through a routine laboratory blood test at clinics or medical laboratories, where the sample is analyzed and the type is accurately recorded in the results.

Another common method is through blood donation, where blood centers like the Red Cross check the donor's blood type and inform them later as part of their donor card or medical record.

Rapid home testing kits are also available that allow for knowing the type within minutes through a simple finger prick, although these tests may not be available or legal in some regions.

The importance of knowing your blood type lies in emergency situations such as accidents requiring urgent blood transfusion, in addition to its significance during surgeries and pregnancies, where complications could occur if the blood types between the mother and fetus are incompatible.

Blood types are divided into four main types: A, B, AB, and O, and are determined based on the presence of antigens in the red blood cells, along with the Rh factor, which makes the type positive or negative.

Type O positive is the most common, while O negative is known as the "universal donor" because it can be transferred to any blood type in emergencies, whereas AB positive is the "universal recipient," and AB negative is the least common.
