Syrian Justice The Execution of Amjad Youssef Would Have Obscured Rania AlAbbasis Fate

Khaberni - Baraa Abdel Rahman, the Director of Media and Communication at the Syrian Ministry of Justice, confirmed that legal accountability in the country is proceeding along a "comprehensive and fair judicial course", indicating the existence of thousands of detainees from former regime figures and officers under investigation and trial.

Abdel Rahman clarified in statements to "Syria Now", that the number of detainees at the ministry reached 6,000 detainees, most of whom belong to the categories of senior "Shabiha" and former regime officers, including pilots and criminals involved in previous violations.

In the context of answering a question regarding the speed of the trials of prominent accused, the Director of Media gave an example about Amjad Youssef, saying:"If he had been killed the moment he was arrested, who would have known the story of the martyr Rania Al-Abbasi? And who would have revealed the confessions he admits to every day?".

He added that judicial procedures represent a comprehensive chain that includes confessions, lawsuits, witnesses, and evidence, which are essential pillars that cannot be compromised to ensure the full disclosure of truths.

In recent days, several Syrian provinces have witnessed intense demonstrations, as protesters say, "to reject the re-floating of figures associated with the ousted regime", and to demand the acceleration of the implementation of transitional justice.

These protests have topped the talk of the Syrian street in recent days, while the government has called on the demonstrators to "exercise restraint", stating in a declaration, it understands "the feelings of anger and pain in the hearts of the families", and that "achieving justice and holding the perpetrators of crimes and violations accountable is a responsibility undertaken by the state".
