Egypt and Belgium An Annoying Number and Another Unprecedented for the Pharaohs in the World Cup

Khaberni - On Monday, the Egyptian team presented a strong and balanced match against Belgium and was close to achieving its first victory in the World Cup history, but the match that ended in a positive draw witnessed a number of notable numbers for the Pharaohs' team, which we will review below:

In a total of 8 matches in the tournament since their first participation in 1934, the "Pharaohs" have so far failed to achieve any victory in the World Cup (3 draws and 5 losses), and this is the second highest number of matches without a win for any team in the history of the tournament, after Honduras (9 matches).

For the first time in Egypt's World Cup history, and after 7 matches, the first half of any match for Egypt ended with a result other than a draw, with Imam Ashour advancing for the Pharaohs in the 19th minute.

The first halves for Egypt in previous tournaments always ended in a draw: Hungary (2-2) in the 1934 World Cup. (1-1) against the Netherlands and (0-0) against Ireland and England in the 1990 World Cup. (0-0) against Uruguay and Russia and (1-1) against Saudi Arabia in the 2018 World Cup.

Mohanad Lashin, the Egyptian team’s midfielder, made 8 successful attempts to intercept the ball against Belgium, which is the highest number of successful attempts by any player so far in the 2026 World Cup.

Hamza Abdel Karim came on as a substitute for Mohamed Salah after 76 minutes, becoming the youngest Egyptian player ever in the Football World Cup (18 years and 165 days).

Mohamed Hani’s own goal, which equalized the score for Belgium, was the third own goal in the 2026 World Cup, and this number exceeds all the own goals scored in the entire 2022 World Cup (two goals).

Although he did not score, Mohamed Salah created the only goal for Egypt, and it coincided with his celebration of turning 34 years old today, making him the first African player to contribute a scoring pass in a World Cup on his birthday.

Belgium.. Numbers That Mean a Lot

On the other hand, Belgium's numbers in the match were extremely negative, including:

Belgian players have shot 46 shots in a row at the World Cup (15 of them in today’s match against Egypt) without scoring any goal, and their goal against the "Pharaohs" was an own goal, scored accidentally by the Egyptian right-back Mohamed Hani, preceded by Belgium’s last goal through Michy Batshuayi against Canada in the first round of the 2022 World Cup.

Belgium has failed to win its last three matches in the World Cup (two draws and a loss), which matches the number in their previous 15 matches in previous tournaments combined (12 wins and 3 losses).

Jeremy Doku became the second Belgian player in the records (since 1966) to perform 8 dribbles (8) and earn 5 fouls (5) in a single World Cup match, preceded only by the veteran Eden Hazard against Panama in the 2018 edition (9 dribbles and 5 fouls).
