Khaberni - Lens entered history through its widest gates, as it was crowned for the first time with the French Cup title after defeating Nice by a score of 3-1, on Friday evening, in the final hosted by the Stade de France.
The crowning moment marked the culmination of an exceptional season for the team coached by Pierre Sage, who led Lens to second place in the French League and secured a qualification for the Champions League, before adding the first title in the club's history in the cup competition.
Despite Nice's strong start, Lens was more effective; Florian Thauvin opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a quick attack exploiting a defensive error, followed by Odsonne Edouard doubling the score with a header just before the end of the first half.
Nice narrowed the gap in stoppage time of the first half through young player, Habibou Diallo, who scored a goal that revived his team's hopes after a corner executed by Jonathan Clauss.
In the second half, Nice pressed strongly in search of an equalizer and came close on several occasions, most notably Antoine Mendy's header that hit the crossbar; yet, Lens knew how to hold defensively before sealing the match with a third goal scored by Abdoulaye Sissoko in the 78th minute.
Thauvin emerged as the star of the match after scoring a goal and delivering a crucial assist, closing his first saison with Lens in the best possible way since returning to French pitches from Udinese.
