Khaberni - Former French football star Eric Cantona reaffirms his solidarity with the Palestinian cause by participating in an international campaign demanding the release of prisoner Marwan Barghouti and all prisoners in Israeli jails.
The campaign account, in collaboration with Cantona's account on Instagram, posted today, Wednesday, photos of the former Manchester United star wearing a shirt in the colors of the Palestinian flag with "Freedom for Marwan" written on it.
The account commented on the photos: "Eric Cantona joins Team Marwan," explaining the reason for this engagement by stating: "In 2002, Israel arrested Marwan Barghouti, who was a member of parliament at the time of his arrest, and he was convicted by a court whose legitimacy he did not recognize, after a trial that international legal experts criticized as flawed and illegal."
It added: "Just like Nelson Mandela, his struggle for freedom has become a symbol for the struggle of an entire people, and like Mandela, he is also a passionate football fan who believes in the ability of sports to unite people."
It continued: "This year, Marwan will miss another World Cup with his children, the seventh since his arrest, and in his honor, we designed a new football shirt bearing the slogan 'Freedom for Marwan' (Free Marwan), inspired by the Palestinian national team shirt from 2002, the same year he was imprisoned."
The campaign account clarified that this shirt is more than just sportswear, it is "a reminder of what football truly represents: unity, justice, freedom, integrity, and resilience, and the refusal to give up."
This engagement coincides with Marwan Barghouti entering his 24th year in Israeli jails since mid-April, and the campaign account also shared scenes over the past few days of interactions from celebrities and activists with the campaign, wearing the shirt bearing the number 24 to signify the number of years of incarceration.
