Khaberni - The CEO of the National Bank of Egypt and president of the Federation of Egyptian Banks, Mohamed El-Etreby, warned banking sector clients about the escalating attempts of online fraud, asserting that depositors' money is safe as long as their data remains confidential.
The economic official explained in his statement last Friday evening that the bank will not request the disclosure of the PIN, card details or verification codes (OTP) via telephone or any communication means.
El-Etreby also alerted to the importance of ignoring calls claiming to offer prizes or impersonating official entities to update data, or requesting financial transfers under the pretense of ensuring the continuity of "Instapay" and banking applications services.
Advanced fraud campaigns
In a related context, the CEO of the Commercial International Bank, Hisham Ezz Al-Arab, had previously warned of the spread of advanced fraud campaigns targeting account theft. He called through his Facebook account to be cautious of fake pages and advertisements, urging clients to immediately contact the bank upon receiving requests for personal data.
He also emphasized that the bank does not request data through social media channels and is not responsible for fraud resulting from a client’s disclosure of their data. These warnings come amid a recent increase in phishing operations in Egypt.
It should be noted that many fraud methods have recently spread in Egypt and other Arab countries and around the world, especially with the development of technical tools and artificial intelligence.
