A 16hour procedure began in Saudi Arabia to separate the conjoined Tanzanian twin Nancy and Nice

Khaberni - The medical and surgical team of the Saudi program for conjoined twins began this morning (Thursday), the separation procedure of the conjoined Tanzanian twin "Nancy and Nice" aged one year and (6) months, at the King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City of the National Guard Ministry in Riyadh.

Multiple thorough examinations

The general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and head of the medical and surgical team, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, stated that the conjoined Tanzanian twins “Nancy and Nice” arrived in the Kingdom on January 27, 2026, and after the twins were admitted to King Abdullah Specialist Hospital for Children, the medical team conducted several thorough and multiple examinations for them and held several meetings that concluded the twins were joined at the lower chest, abdomen, and pelvis area, each having one lower limb and sharing a deformed third lower limb.

He explained that the examinations revealed that they shared the liver, large intestine, anus, as well as the urinary and genital systems, with a deformity in the external shared genitalia.

The operation takes 16 hours over 10 phases

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah indicated that the operation is scheduled to take about 16 hours over 10 phases, involving 35 consultants, specialists, nursing and technical staff from specialties like anesthesia, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopedics, and other supporting specialties, noting that the operation is intricate and its success rate - God willing - is over 60%.


The third operation for conjoined twins from Tanzania

Dr. Al-Rabeeah pointed out that this operation is the third one for conjoined twins from Tanzania, and it is number (71) within the Saudi program for conjoined twins, which since 1990, has cared for (157) twins from (28) countries across (5) continents.

On his behalf and on behalf of his colleagues, the members of the medical team, he expressed his gratitude, appreciation, and thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his trustworthy Crown Prince for the continuous support and attention the program receives, praying to God Almighty for the success of the operation, and for granting health and well-being to the Tanzanian twins.
