Open AI Aiming to Launch Its Smartphone Next Year

Khaberni - Open AI is moving faster than expected in developing its first smartphone and is now targeting its release in 2027, which puts it on a direct path to compete with iPhone.

The initial details indicate that this phone will focus heavily on tasks supported by artificial intelligence rather than traditional app-based interactions, signaling a clear shift in how phones will operate in the coming years.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a technology industry analyst, said that the latest updates indicate an ambitious timeline that includes starting mass production in the first half of 2027, according to a report by technology news site "9to5Mac", which was reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".

This means that the company will likely seek to launch the phone to the public later that same year if the development process goes according to plan and supply chain goals stabilize.

The analyst noted that MediaTek appears "currently in a better position to become the exclusive supplier of processors, with the device scheduled to use a custom version of the Dimensity 9600 chip built on TSMC's N2P technology in the second half of 2026".

He said, "If development continues as planned, shipments (of the phone) between 2027 and 2028 could reach around 30 million units".

Launching a smartphone next year seems very ambitious for Open AI, which has been working on device development for a while.

Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI, recently hinted at the company's phone project. He said last week that it is time to seriously reconsider how operating systems and user interfaces are designed.
