Greater Amman Municipality launches downtown beautification project

Khaberni - The Greater Amman Municipality has launched its developmental project, beautifying and developing downtown which aims to improve the urban appearance, encourage tourism economies, achieve sustainable development, and apply smart city concepts, making the city center a global tourist attraction.

This was during the reception of the city manager Nabil Al-Jariri, who welcomed a delegation from the University of Jordan including students specializing in archaeology, heritage resources management, tourism, and architectural engineering, as part of an initiative to integrate academic experience into field projects and benefit from innovative young ideas in the beautification, development, and preparation of the proposed urban site.

The Deputy City Manager for Planning and Economic Development Affairs, the General Supervisor of the Project, Ziad Abu Arabi, emphasized the importance of the project and the need to prepare an executive plan for it in accordance with the Greater Amman Municipality's strategic plan for the years 2027 / 2031 within its vision to transform downtown Amman into an urban destination that combines authenticity, heritage, and modern design aesthetics, beautifying the area and revitalizing its identity in a contemporary style that reflects the spirit of the city and its aspirations, to make it a global tourist attraction.

During a field tour with the student delegation, the Executive Manager for the Development of Amman's Neighborhoods and the Project Manager, Mohammed Abu Zaitoun, gave a detailed explanation about the project and its objectives, which include beautifying and improving the facades of buildings in the city center to match the heritage of Amman and its visual identity.

Abu Zaitoun outlined that the project aims to create smart tourist paths, develop and work on model pavements and smart signage, create smart parking, generate urban spaces, make traffic improvements, and public transportation services, by preparing preliminary studies in partnership with all government institutions, the local community, and Jordanian universities to create a general urban plan for the development and beautification of the city center.

He emphasized the importance of implementing the project in accordance with the strategy of the Greater Amman Municipality consistent with the standards of a smart city, pointing out the need to prepare innovative and creative projects that serve the modern city while preserving its heritage and authenticity.

The field tour, which involved several directors from the municipality and the Director of the Capital Archaeology Directorate, covered the sites nominated for development, in addition to visiting the "Station Beautification Project" as a practical model of rehabilitation works previously carried out by the municipality, to enable students to evaluate the implementation mechanisms and propose developmental and innovative solutions.

The project aims to restore vitality to the historical center while preserving the cultural and architectural identity and consolidating the partnership between government and academic institutions as a sustainable approach to urban development.

It is worth mentioning that the scope of the project includes the development and beautification of the area extending from Al-Muhajireen signal to Al-Mahatta Bridge, passing through Ali Bin Abi Talib Street, Quraish Street, King Faisal Square, King Talal Street, Omar Matar Street, and the area adjacent to the Jabal Al-Qala'a archaeological site.
