This came after a recent court decision that could include millions of players, and you might be among them.
The case dates back to a class action lawsuit filed against Sony in 2021, where the plaintiffs objected to how the PlayStation store was managed, particularly after the cancellation of game purchase cards that were sold through external vendors in April 2019.
The French newspaper explained that these cards allowed users to buy games at lower prices outside the official platform, but after their cancellation, competition declined, which, according to the complaint, led to higher prices for digital games.
The plaintiffs believed that this policy forced players to pay higher than necessary amounts for some games.
The American court found these arguments strong enough to approve a financial settlement, under which Sony will pay about 7.85 million dollars to compensate the affected parties.
However, the compensation will not be in the form of a full refund, but rather a credit added to the user's account on the PlayStation network.
As for those eligible to benefit, there is a basic requirement related to the geographical location, as this settlement is limited to residents of the United States at the time of purchase.
Therefore, users in Europe or Arab countries are not currently included, although similar procedures are being studied in the United Kingdom.
It's also required that the user has purchased at least one digital game between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, and that it be among a specific list that includes well-known games like "NBA".
Regarding how to obtain the compensation, the process is quite simple, as most users will not be required to take any action.
If you meet the conditions, you will be automatically included in the list of beneficiaries, unless you decide to withdraw before the specified deadline of July 2, 2026.
Regarding the payment method, the funds will not be transferred to a bank account, but a small monetary amount will be added to your balance on PlayStation, which can be used directly within the store. Estimates indicate that the value of the compensation will be limited, ranging between one and three dollars for each purchased game.
Finally, the final decision is expected to be adopted during an official session on October 15, where the final values of the compensations and the precise distribution mechanism will be determined.
