South Korean Ship Caught Fire in the Strait of Hormuz to Be Towed to Dubai

Khaberni - The South Korean shipping company (HMM) announced on Wednesday that it has secured a vessel to tow the bulk cargo carrier it manages to a port in Dubai, after an explosion and fire caused damage to the ship which was stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump blamed the incident on an Iranian attack, while the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the cause of the fire will not be confirmed until the ship is towed to the port and inspected.

HMM said in a text message that the damaged ship is expected to arrive in Dubai on Thursday night or Friday morning, Seoul time.

The ship, which flies the Panamanian flag and named (Namu), experienced an explosion and caught fire on Monday evening. The company said it was later able to extinguish the fire without any injuries, and all 24 crew members remained on board.

Trump said in a social media post that Iran fired on a ship operated by Korea and other targets at the time the United States began its operation to open the strait.

He urged South Korea to join these efforts.

About one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas typically pass through this waterway.

South Korea is cautious about getting directly involved in an Iran war.

Trump later said he would temporarily halt the operation to help ships pass through the strategic waterway, indicating a "significant progress" toward reaching a comprehensive agreement with Iran.
