After a 20 salary cut Lukaku returns to Napoli before the World Cup

Khaberni - Romelu Lukaku's potential return to the pitch is expected to boost Belgium's hopes in the World Cup, after weeks of uncertainty regarding the historical team's top scorer's readiness to participate in the tournament next month.

The Italian newspaper "Quotidiano Sportivo" reported that Lukaku will return to Napoli on Monday, after spending five weeks in Belgium recuperating from recurring injuries.

Napoli had imposed a fine on the 32-year-old player for not joining the team after the international break in March, as he preferred to stay in Belgium to continue treatment with his preferred physiotherapist.

Lukaku joined the Belgian squad in preparation for two friendly matches before the World Cup, but he did not travel due to pain in his hamstrings and hip.

Reports added that Napoli deducted 20 percent of his monthly salary after his failure to return, despite him returning on April 20 and obtaining permission to continue his treatment in Belgium, and he did not speak to coach Antonio Conte, who expressed his dissatisfaction in a television interview four days later.

Conte said: I didn't have the opportunity to speak to him. I know that one of the board members had contacted him. Lukaku came to the training center. My office was there, but nobody knocked on my door. It really hurt me.

Napoli, who are second in the league, has three matches left in the Italian league this season, hosting Bologna and Udinese, and playing an away match against Pisa in between.

Lukaku, who will turn 33 later this month, has not started as a main player with Napoli this season, participating as a substitute six times and scoring a goal against Verona in February.

With the Belgian national team, he has scored 89 goals, but his last appearance out of 124 international matches was in a 4-3 win against Wales at home in the World Cup qualifiers in June last year.

The Belgian team will play against Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand in Group 7 at the World Cup.
