Khaberni - Russia announced the appearance of the first clinical results for a new vaccine against melanoma type skin cancer, which is considered an early step in the path of developing modern immunotherapies, as reported by the Russian agency "Sputnik".
The scientific director of Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gintsburg, said that the first patient who received the vaccine showed a slight improvement in the initial examinations, with limited changes in immune indicators.
He explained that the analyses included measuring cytokine production, where initial positive indicators were observed, but they are still insufficient to draw final conclusions about the vaccine's effectiveness.
Gintsburg pointed out that the patient still needs about 10 additional doses, confirming that the principal immune results are yet to appear, and that final evaluation requires completing the therapeutic program.
He indicated that the patient is undergoing medical follow-up at his home in the Kursk region, under the supervision of the regional cancer center, and is due to receive the next dose in May.
The National Center for Radiological Medical Research began, last April, the first clinical use of the "NeooOncovac" vaccine, developed using messenger ribonucleic acid technology, in collaboration with Gamaleya Center.
This development is an initial step in a long path to assess the effectiveness of therapeutic anti-cancer vaccines, amid scientific anticipation for the results of clinical trials in their subsequent stages.
