39000 Jordanians have more than one wife

Khaberni  - The Higher Population Council has issued the best press briefing titled "The Current Marital Status of Jordanian Males and Females," pointing to the marriage rates in Jordan.

Below is the report:

The population's marital status varies from the number of marriages performed in courts and registered at the Directorate of Civil Status and Passports every year.

By marital status, it means the distribution of Jordanians (15+ years) into two groups: (1) those who have been married before, (2) those who have not yet married.

The current marital status of Jordanian males and females is not the product of a single year, but a result of many decades of marriages, divorces, and deaths among Jordanians, which is why it does not change overnight as it is often claimed.

The latest available data from the Directorate of Civil Status and Passports shows that 67.3% of Jordanian females (15+ years) have been married before, and that 56.9% of Jordanian males (15+ years) have also been married before. This group includes both currently married men and women, as well as divorced individuals and widowers from both genders.

If we exclude the younger age group of 15-19 years, the percentage of Jordanians who have been married before increases to 66.7% for males and 77.5% for females, and generally, the percentage of those who have been married increases with age to about 96% among Jordanian males and females aged 75 and above.

As for polygamy among Jordanian men, it is a rare condition, with only about 1.3% of married Jordanian men having more than one wife, totaling approximately 39,000 husbands. The low rate of polygamy in Jordan is due to the fact that a married man frequently divorces his first wife before marrying a second one, meaning he remains with only one wife, making monogamy the prevalent pattern in Jordan, and polygamy a rare condition.

Among the various categories of marital status, there are divorced individuals and widows from both genders. The rate of divorced males among Jordanians aged 25 and older is 3.3%, and among females 5.6%. However, there is a significant difference between Jordanian males and females in the percentage and number of widows. While the percentage of widowers among Jordanian men aged 60+ is less than one percent, the percentage reaches about 42% among Jordanian females of the same age group. While the number of widowers among Jordanian men is less than three thousand, the number of widows among Jordanian females is around 221,000.

The significant difference between Jordanian males and females in the percentage and number of widows is due to nine reasons, seven of which are demographic and social, and two others are biological and legislative.
