Famous tribal family in Turkey reduces wedding costs with 21 decisions including gifts and banquets

Khaberni - In an unprecedented social step, the Koyan tribe, one of the most prominent and largest Kurdish tribes in Şırnak province, southeastern Turkey, announced a new set of decisions aimed at reducing wedding costs and easing the heavy financial burdens that have burdened the youth and delayed their pursuit of forming new families.

The step, described as a "social revolution" within a conservative tribal society, came after an extensive meeting that brought together tribal elders and sheikhs, along with mayors, village heads, and representatives of the youth to discuss one of the most pressing social issues: the increasing costs of weddings and associated lavish practices that have burdened families, pushing many youths to postpone or forgo marriage.

The meeting held in the "Mendi Kan" area of Şırnak province concluded with the adoption of 21 new regulatory items, aiming to recalibrate the marriage traditions within the tribe and reduce the exaggeration in expenses that had, over recent years, become a growing economic and social burden.

The new decisions included reducing expenses linked to wedding ceremonies, setting clear limits for expenses on occasions, and regulating the requirements of gold and gifts that were traditionally imposed on the groom, as well as reducing spending on musical bands, photography, and large banquets, which were among the main reasons for the inflated costs of weddings.

This package of decisions aims to remove the financial obstacles facing youth desiring to marry, especially under the current tough economic conditions and rising living costs, where wedding ceremonies in some regions represent a burden beyond many families' capabilities, leading to a growing phenomenon of debt and delayed age of marriage.

The tribal members see this initiative as a significant shift in handling social traditions, especially since many customs associated with marriage no longer align with the current economic reality, but have over time become a source of pressure on both the youth and their families.

This step carries broader social implications beyond just reducing expenses, as it reflects a shift in the perspective towards marriage from being a field of social rivalry and status display, to being a humane and family project that should be based on facilitation and stability, not debts and financial drain.

Observers affirm that the importance of this initiative lies not only in the decisions themselves but in the entity that launched them, as the Koyan tribe is one of the tribes with significant social weight and influence in the region, which gives this step an impact that extends beyond its internal limits, potentially serving as a model for other tribal societies within and outside of Turkey.

This initiative is also seen as a direct social message to communities that still cling to expensive wedding rituals despite profound economic changes, implying that maintaining traditions doesn't mean adhering to practices that burden people and hinder their stability, but rather reshaping them to align with the demands of reality as reported by Turkish media.

It is expected that this step will open the door to wider discussions within tribal communities in Turkey regarding the need to review social customs associated with marriage, seeking more balanced formulas that consider economic circumstances while preserving the social and cultural dimensions of the occasion.

While many youths in the region face increasing challenges in building their future, this initiative represents a serious attempt to rebalance tradition and reality, and between customs and needs, in a move that could mark the beginning of a broader social transformation encapsulated by the slogan: less expensive weddings and more stability.
