Tragedy off the Libyan coast Boat sinking kills 38 migrants including Egyptians

Khaberni - The Mediterranean waves engulfed the dreams of 38 irregular migrants, including Egyptians, Sudanese, and Ethiopians, after their boat capsized off the coast of the Libyan city of Tobruk, highlighting the escalating risks of irregular migration journeys via this dangerous maritime route.

This tragedy brings to the forefront the risks faced by migrants who risk their lives on decrepit boats, fleeing harsh economic and living conditions in their countries, hoping to reach the European shore, a journey that often ends in death at sea.

In a related context, the Public Prosecutor's office in Libya announced on its Facebook page that the prosecution continues to pursue a criminal group involved in the smuggling of migrants, following the incident that killed 38 irregular migrants off the coast of Tobruk.

The statement clarified that the criminal group had smuggled irregular migrants from the beaches of Tobruk towards the northern Mediterranean, aboard a dilapidated and unsafe boat, failing to reach their destination, leading to the death of all on board, including Sudanese, Egyptians, and Ethiopians.

It added that the prosecutor in Tobruk initiated an investigation into the incident, which identified several individuals involved in coordinating the smuggling operation across the sea, alongside seizing about 300,000 dinars obtained from criminal activities related to the incident, uncovering unlicensed financial networks suspected of being used to finance smuggling operations, and issuing orders to arrest and bring in the gang members and continue verifying the identities of the victims.

In a related field development, Libyan naval forces' coast guard teams managed to recover the bodies of 17 migrants, while the bodies of 9 others were lost, in one of the toughest rescue operations witnessed by the Libyan coasts.

Also, the Libyan Red Crescent and security sources announced the rescue of 7 other migrants after their boat malfunctioned and they were stranded at sea for 8 days, in conditions described as harsh and complicated.

The association explained that its teams, in cooperation with the naval forces and coast guard, conducted rescue operations and recovered bodies off the city of Tobruk, continuing the operation for about 8 continuous hours under difficult conditions. First aid and humanitarian support were also provided to the survivors immediately upon their arrival at the landing point, in partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

New data released by the International Organization for Migration indicate concerns over the death or disappearance of more than 180 people in recent sinking incidents in the Mediterranean, bringing the total number of deaths in 2026 to nearly 1,000 so far.

The repetition of migrant drowning incidents in the Mediterranean, the latest off the coast of Tobruk, has sparked widespread outrage and dissatisfaction amid rising criticism of the lack of fundamental solutions to stop the smuggling networks that push migrants into death-ridden journeys.

Activists on social media platforms expressed their shock at the continuing tragedies, considering what is happening not just individual incidents but "a recurring humanitarian disaster," calling for stricter surveillance of smuggling networks and enhancing international cooperation to save lives at sea, rather than just performing rescue operations after disasters occur.
