The Ethics of University Professors When Character Builds Generations and Its Absence Destroys a Future
Author: الدكتورة وئام الشرمان

Khaberni - The value of a university professor is not measured only by what degrees or academic titles they hold, nor by the number of published research papers or years of experience, but first and foremost by the impact they leave on their students' hearts and minds. A university professor is not merely an employee who enters a classroom to explain the material and then leaves; they are carriers of a profound mission, mentors to generations, and role models whose behavior students watch before their words.
A university is not just a place for imparting information, but an environment where personalities are built, values are honed, and young people's perspectives on life, work, and respect are shaped. Therefore, a university professor's role is much bigger than just lecturing or grading exams. Some may not realize that a single word can make a difference in a student's life, and a simple human gesture can remain in their memory for many years.
As I recall my study years, I remember with great appreciation a group of professors who passed through my academic life and left an unforgettable impact. They were distinguished not only by their knowledge but also by their ethics, humility, respect for students, fairness in treatment, and their commitment to supporting everyone equally. Some of them listened attentively to students, some instilled confidence, and some made the university hall a place of safety, motivation, and ambition. These names are not forgotten because they taught us humanity before the curriculum.
However, on the other hand, one cannot deny the existence of other models who reach academic positions yet lack the simplest foundations of professional and human ethics. Not everyone who earns a Ph.D. degree is qualified to educate generations, and not all who possess knowledge possess the wisdom to use it. Science without ethics is incomplete, and a position without a message turns into just a mere title.
It is unfortunate that some students leave the classrooms frustrated due to an arrogant manner, mockery, injustice, discrimination, or disrespectful treatment. It is even more regrettable when some misunderstand their position and view female students in a way far removed from educational values, whereas they ought to see them as daughters and a moral responsibility before anything else. A true professor preserves their status, maintains respect boundaries, and understands that their mission is noble and lofty.
Before being granted the right to stand before students and guide them, one must possess ethical standards that match, or perhaps exceed, their knowledge. Because a student may forget some information they learned, but they will never forget who respected them, supported them, and boosted their morale, just as they won't forget who hurt them or shattered their self-confidence.
A professor of good character does not merely teach a subject but builds a generation. They instill confidence, encourage creativity, and make students feel valued. But those who misuse their authority or deal with superiority, harshness, or exploitation destroy more than they build, and tarnish the image of education in the eyes of young people.
Today, universities need a real review of the concept of a university professor. Scientific competence alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by integrity, respect, justice, and ethical awareness. Because building nations does not start from buildings and halls, but from the person who stands in front of students every morning, carrying knowledge, a message, and ethics.
And the most important question remains: Should we evaluate a university professor only by what they know, or by what they instill in their students, values that stay with them for life?
