AlZaidi Begins Consultations on Forming the Iraqi Government

Khaberni  - The designated Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, on Wednesday, started his official first steps to mobilize political support for his anticipated government, in his efforts to overcome the ministerial formation obstacles.

Al-Zaidi held separate meetings with the head of the State of Law coalition Nouri Al-Maliki, the Secretary-General of the Badr Organization Hadi Al-Amiri, and the head of the National Wisdom Movement Ammar Al-Hakim, according to statements issued by the Prime Minister’s office.

During his meeting with Al-Maliki, Al-Zaidi emphasized the necessity of combining the efforts of all political forces to expedite the formation of a national government that meets the aspirations of Iraqis across the country.

The State of Law coalition is a fundamental pillar in these consultations, owning 29 parliamentary seats out of 329, placing it second inside the Coordination Framework in terms of electoral weight, after the Reconstruction and Development coalition which leads the scene with 46 seats, headed by current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani.

In context, Al-Zaidi discussed with Al-Amiri the importance of enhancing the work of all political forces and their diligent efforts to form a national government. The Badr Organization represents a significant preponderant weight in Parliament with its 18 seats.

In his meeting with Al-Hakim, who heads a current of 14 parliamentary seats, both parties discussed the necessity to intensify efforts from all political forces to quickly form a national government that meets the needs of Iraqis in various regions of the country.

For Gaining Confidence

Through these three meetings, Al-Zaidi aims to secure 61 votes, which represents approximately 37% of the legal quorum required to gain the confidence of the Parliament, which is 165 votes.

On Monday, the Iraqi President Nizar Amidi tasked Al-Zaidi with forming the new government after the Coordination Framework - the parliamentary bloc with the highest number of seats - agreed on nominating him for the position of Prime Minister.

The Coordination Framework is the political umbrella that encompasses the main Shiite forces in Iraq (excluding the Sadrist Movement), established after the 2021 elections to ensure political balance.

According to the political apportionment system, the position of the President of the Republic is part of the Kurdish component and is held by Amidi, while the position of the Prime Minister is for the Shiite component, and the position of the Speaker of the Parliament is part of the Sunni component and is held by Hibat Al-Halbusi.
