Khaberni - Major General Raed Al-Assaf, Director of Traffic Management, confirmed on Wednesday that the traffic situation in Jordan falls within the challenges experienced by different countries worldwide, due to population growth, urban expansion, and the increase in vehicle numbers.
Al-Assaf, during a meeting with the Administrative Committee of the Senate chaired by Senator Tawfiq Krishan, and attended by the Assistant Director of Public Security for Traffic Affairs Major General Mohannad Al-Batayneh and the Executive Director of Traffic at the Greater Amman Municipality, Mohammad Jadou', referred to the national efforts in this field, which stem from the Royal directives aimed at reducing traffic accidents, congestion and enhancing road safety.
Al-Assaf explained that the Traffic Management has prepared, in cooperation with various relevant entities, a national plan for traffic safety, to ensure unified efforts and enhance collaborative work to mitigate traffic crises and accidents, based on scientific principles and a comprehensive vision that responds to rapid changes.
He indicated that traffic indicators over the past five years showed a 4% increase in vehicle numbers, against a population growth of 1.9%, noting that the number of registered vehicles last year reached about 2.115 million vehicles, compared to about 2 million vehicles in 2024, while the first quarter of this year recorded an increase to about 2.5 million vehicles.
Al-Assaf pointed out that this significant increase puts direct pressure on the infrastructure, however, the efforts made have contributed to achieving a noticeable reduction in the number of deaths resulting from traffic accidents, reflecting the impact of the measures taken to enhance traffic safety and increase the efficiency of monitoring and regulation.
