Resumption of Flights at Tehran Airport

Khaberni  - Iranian authorities announced the resumption of flights at Imam Khomeini International Airport, the largest in the country, after a stoppage that lasted about 58 days due to the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28.

According to Al Jazeera's correspondent in Tehran, Amer Lafi, air traffic gradually resumed last Saturday with flights including regional and international destinations such as Medina, Istanbul, Muscat, China, and Russia.

The airport director confirmed to Al Jazeera's correspondent their readiness to receive travelers and airlines, noting that current activities are limited to local companies.

Imam Khomeini International Airport management says it is continuously negotiating with foreign companies to convince them to return, and these companies will soon begin operating at the airport.

Al Jazeera's correspondent notes that flights also started at 10 to 11 airports, some as part of domestic flights and others international.

The Iranian civil aviation sector was widely affected during the war, leading to an almost complete suspension of international flights and the rerouting of global airlines to alternative paths.

Concerns

According to the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization, 20 airplanes were destroyed and are no longer usable. However, the infrastructure at airports was not damaged and is ready at about 95%, according to the correspondent.

The Iranian authorities downplay the extent of losses, stating that 130 civil aircraft are still ready for operation with the reopening of the airports.

Foreign companies are apprehensive about returning to work at Iranian airports amid the uncertainty that surrounds the political and negotiation scene between Tehran and Washington.

Iran started gradually reopening its airspace on the 19th of this month in four stages, covering transit flights then domestic flights, leading up to a full resumption of international airports, as announced by the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization.
