Jordan A supermarket owner sentenced to 5 years in prison in a minor harassment case

Khaberni - The Supreme Court upheld a ruling issued by the Grand Criminal Court that sentences a supermarket owner to five years in prison, after his conviction for harassing a minor girl in the capital Amman.

The details of the case date back to early 2020, where the court convicted the accused of assaulting a 13-year-old girl, in incidents that occurred more than once inside his apartment in the Jabal Al-Hussein area.

The investigations revealed that the victim used to visit the accused's store to buy her necessities, before the relationship evolved to communication via social media, and then meetings outside the work context, which continued for a period before the case was uncovered and legal actions were taken against him.

The accused had appealed against the ruling, claiming insufficient evidence, while the public prosecutor demanded the decision be upheld. After review, the Supreme Court confirmed the correctness of the procedures followed by the Criminal Court, considering that the ruling was in accordance with the law and based on the evidence presented.

The court noted that the accused admitted to the act during the investigations, which reinforced its conviction of the validity of the conviction and the merit of the punishment, emphasizing the Jordanian judiciary's approach to being stringent with crimes targeting minors and imposing deterrent penalties on their perpetrators.
