United Nations Imposes Sanctions on Brother of Sudanese Rapid Support Forces Commander

Khaberni - The United Nations imposed, on Tuesday, sanctions on Al-Goni Hamdan Dagalo Musa, the younger brother of the commander of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces, and on 3 Colombian mercenaries accused of recruiting former Colombian military personnel to fight in Sudan.

A statement issued by the British Mission to the United Nations stated that the UN Security Council imposed the sanctions based on a proposal from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

The list included Al-Goni Hamdan Dagalo Musa, whom the statement mentioned as having led efforts for the Rapid Support Forces to purchase weapons and military equipment.

Sanctions were also imposed on Alvaro Andres Quijano Becerra, Claudia Viviana Oliveros Forero, and Mateo Andres Duque Botero, who, the statement said, played a central role in recruiting former Colombian soldiers.

Evidence in video clips and photographs showed that the three Colombians "provide the Rapid Support Forces with tactical and technical expertise and serve as infantry soldiers, artillery operators, drone operators, vehicle operators, and trainers, even training children to fight in the ranks of the Rapid Support Forces."

In February, the United Kingdom, along with France and the United States, succeeded in issuing sanctions against 4 leaders of the Rapid Support Forces due to atrocities committed during the siege of the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher.

The Colombian mercenaries participated in several battles in different parts of Sudan, including the capital Khartoum, Omdurman, Kordofan, and El Fasher.

The ongoing war for 3 years between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has led to what relief organizations describe as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world currently.

Earlier in April, the United States imposed sanctions on 5 companies and individuals it said were involved in recruiting former Colombian military personnel to fight on behalf of the Rapid Support Forces.

It said that hundreds of former Colombian military personnel have gone to Sudan to support the Rapid Support Forces.
