Study Warns of the Dangers of Dietary Supplements for Children

Khaberni - Researchers in the United States have noticed a significant increase in the rates of children's consumption of dietary supplements and alternative medicine products in recent years, despite limited scientific evidence supporting their health benefits for this age group.

The research team, which includes academics from the Universities of "California," "Southern California," and "Berkeley," based their analysis on data from three national surveys about children's dietary patterns between 2015 and 2023.

The results showed that the use of "melatonin," dietary fiber, and "probiotics" (beneficial bacteria) more than doubled during this period.

Details of Common Components
The study reported that 35% of children rely on dietary supplements, with boys having higher consumption rates during childhood, while the rate increases among girls in adolescence.

According to the results published in the journal "Pediatrics Open Science," one in every five children takes multivitamin tablets, while supplements containing zinc, vitamin "D," and iron topped the list of most widespread substances.

Health Complications and Poisoning Cases
The study warned that some of these supplements are associated with poisoning incidents and health complications among children and adolescents. The researchers particularly highlighted "melatonin," pointing out its direct link to an increase in emergency room visits due to indigestion and other complications.

In statements to the "Health Day" medical site, the research team emphasized the importance of raising community awareness about the potential health risks of these supplements, stressing the need for caution when presenting them to children and adolescents without sufficient medical justification.
