AlMasri Plans to Privatize the Waste Sector in Municipalities

Khaberni - Minister of Local Administration Walid Al-Masri said on Tuesday that there has been a notable improvement in the level of cleanliness across various municipalities of the kingdom, indicating that the next step is the privatization of the cleaning sector.

Al-Masri explained during his talk with "Al-Mamlaka" that several projects will be worked on concurrently, where one will rely on the "Zero Waste" theory, with only 10% of the waste remaining for landfill, while the rest is sorted, recycled, reused, and manufactured, creating job opportunities.

He added that in another area, a system of sorting, collection, and transportation will be adopted, and in a third area, work will be done on recycling paper, cardboard, and textiles.

Al-Masri referred to two projects for new environmental landfills; the first at Al-Akider costing 35 million dinars, funded by a European grant and implemented through the Ministry of Local Administration, and the second at Al-Azraq landfill which cost about 24 million dinars funded by a grant, where the completion and acceptance have been finalized.

Al-Masri said that there is intense interest during the spring season in picnic areas and archaeological and tourist sites, noting that the Ministry of Local Administration has spent through tenders approximately 5 to 6 million dinars to date, indicating that the management of cleaning at picnic sites will be assigned to specialized companies, with the aim of maintaining cleanliness that befits Jordan.
