Prison Sentences in Bahrain for Espionage Cases and Support for Iran

Today, Tuesday, the High Criminal Court in the Bahraini capital, Manama, sentenced 5 defendants (two Afghans and three Bahrainis) to life imprisonment in two separate cases on charges of espionage with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to carry out hostile acts within Bahrain, with the acquittal of a sixth Bahraini defendant, and the deportation of the foreign defendants from the country after serving their sentences.

According to the Bahrain News Agency, the court also issued prison sentences ranging from 5 to 10 years for 24 defendants in 22 cases related to supporting Iranian attacks on Bahrain. The court also sentenced one defendant to a year in prison with a fine and ordered the confiscation of seized items.

The Public Prosecution stated that it received several reports from the Cybercrime Unit, indicating surveillance of social media accounts that support the Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom of Bahrain, sharing vital data and photographing sensitive locations that are prohibited to photograph, alongside broadcasting news and false rumors aimed at damaging the moral spirit of the Bahraini society amidst its exposure to Iranian aggression.

The prosecution affirmed that freedom of expression is guaranteed within the framework of the law, emphasizing that publishing or circulating materials endorsing "terrorist acts" or disclosing prohibited data constitutes a breach of national security. The prosecution reiterated its continued legal actions against violators.

The Bahraini Public Prosecution called on citizens and residents to comply with the law, to act responsibly when using social media, affirming that the security and stability of the nation are inalterable, and that it will not hesitate to take deterring legal actions against those who violate the law.
