Controversial Study Common Allergy Medication Rivals Viagra in Sexual Effects

Khaberni  - Researchers have found that a common medication used to treat hay fever may have an unexpected effect on the sexual lives of some users.

It has been reported that individuals taking a type of antihistamine, which is also used to treat insomnia, have noticed a significant effect on their libido, in some cases comparable to drugs like Viagra.

The results show that these over-the-counter drugs, used by millions worldwide, may be associated with an increase in sexual arousal, sensitivity, and pleasure for some users. One participant in the study said the effect was so strong that they felt physically and mentally exhausted.

The medication in question revolves around "Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride" (DPH), an antihistamine commonly used to treat allergy symptoms, which is also part of known medical formulations such as "Nytol Original," "Boots Sleep Ease," and "Histergan," and is further utilized for treating insect bites and eczema.

These findings are surprising, as this drug is usually associated with side effects such as drowsiness or erectile dysfunction, not an increase in sexual desire. However, researchers have found that it may contribute in some cases to facilitating sexual arousal and increasing sensitivity and pleasure upon reaching orgasm.

The reason behind the varying effect from person to person remains unclear, but one hypothesis suggests that the way the body metabolizes the drug may play a role, where its impact can shift from sedative to stimulant in some individuals.

The study was based on the experiences of nine individuals aged between 20 and 36 years, who had discussed in an online forum their increased sexual arousal after taking the medication. The sample included individuals who typically suffer from low sexual desire, including a woman who was taking antidepressants that usually negatively affect libido, but she said that "Diphenhydramine" helped her overcome this effect.

Some participants compared the effect of this medication with drugs like Viagra, noting that the latter improves physical performance, while "Diphenhydramine," according to their description, enhances sensation and pleasure.
