Washington Considers New Iranian Proposals

Khaberni - The United States said on Monday that it is studying the latest Iranian proposals related to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, two months after the outbreak of the war that is exerting pressure on the global economy.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt stated that Washington is examining a new Iranian proposal, following media reports about a new offer made by Tehran through Pakistani mediators.

So far, mediations and negotiations have not succeeded in reaching a final cessation of the war and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, despite a ceasefire being in place for about three weeks.

According to Axios, Tehran has made a new offer that involves opening the strait while delaying negotiations on the nuclear dossier, information that was reported by the Iranian news agency IRNA without commenting on it.

Normally, a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied gas production passes through the Strait of Hormuz, but it is now subject to a dual blockade by Iran and America.

"Better than we expected"

Washington has not yet disclosed the details of the offer. However, President Donald Trump held a meeting with his senior advisors on Monday.

Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said, "Clearly, we will not negotiate through the media," but he described the Iranian offer as "better than we expected."

He added, "We must ensure that any agreement we reach permanently prevents them from possessing nuclear weapons at any time."

After the United States canceled a second round of negotiations in Pakistan, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi conducted a series of diplomatic visits and contacts, the last of which was a visit to Russia on Monday where he met President Vladimir Putin.

Araghchi attributed the failure of negotiations with Washington to "excessive demands" from the American side, emphasizing that his country remains resilient despite the thousands of raids it has received and the current blockade on its ports.

Putin affirmed that Russia, one of the biggest supporters of Iran, will do its utmost to achieve peace as quickly as possible.

"Reliable guarantees"

The Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said on Monday that Tehran needs guarantees against another U.S.-Israeli attack before it can stabilize the situation in the Gulf region.

The Iranian ambassador's remarks came in a meeting of the United Nations Security Council which was attended by dozens of countries condemning the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian parliament is working on a law that would place the strait under the jurisdiction of the armed forces.

According to this proposal, Israeli ships would be banned from passing, and transit fees would have to be paid in Iranian rial.

In response, Marco Rubio told Fox News, "The Iranians cannot be allowed to establish a system where they decide who can use an international waterway and how much they must pay for it."

In Tehran, many Iranians are expressing concern. Farshad, a 41-year-old businessman, said, "The situation has become different, people are in shock, many do not have the money to buy anything, even food."

In Lebanon, Israeli raids in the south have killed four people and injured 51, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Thus, the death toll in Lebanon has risen to at least forty, according to the Ministry of Health, since the start of a ceasefire marred by many violations on April 17.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem renewed his rejection of the planned direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel under American sponsorship, describing them as "surrender."

In contrast, Lebanese President Jouzaf Aoun responded that the goal of direct negotiations with Israel is to end the war, accusing those who dragged the country into it of committing "treason," in an implicit reference to Hezbollah.
