Khaberni - A woman in the United States faces a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted of throwing homemade dynamite at her sleeping lover, resulting in the amputation of his hand during his attempt to move the explosive device away.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's office stated that Keiona Wadel (35 years old from Long Island) was convicted on charges stemming from an incident in March 2024, which escalated into violence after a heated argument between the two.
District Attorney Ray Tierney commented after the conviction, saying: "Domestic violence can escalate to deadly levels, and this case serves as a stark reminder of that fact."
The District Attorney mentioned that Wadel had previously threatened several times to use the dynamite against her then-boyfriend in the months leading up to the incident, but he never expected her to carry out her threat.
Both left the victim's apartment (whose identity has not been disclosed) after their argument on March 22, 2024, but he eventually returned and went to sleep. Then, Wadel threw the explosive device in his room, according to officials.
The police explained that the boyfriend woke up shortly afterwards to a "hissing sound," then saw flames on the floor which he was unable to extinguish over time. The police revealed that he tried to pick up the device to throw it outside, but the primitive bomb exploded and amputated most of his hand.
The District Attorney stated that the victim staggered into the driveway screaming for help, and saw Wadel fleeing the scene.
Officials also stated that the responding police quickly transported him to the Nassau University Medical Center, where the remainder of his hand and part of his arm were amputated.
Wadel was arrested just one day later and was recently convicted of assault and several charges relating to criminal weapons possession. The so-called "bomb bomber" is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on May 27.
