Axios Iranian Proposal to Open Hormuz and End War with Delay of Nuclear File

Khaberni - An American official and two sources informed that Iran has proposed to the United States, through Pakistani intermediaries, a plan that involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, with the delay of nuclear negotiations to a later stage, as reported by Axios.

According to Axios, the proposal aims to break the deadlock in the talks, but it might reduce Donald Trump's leverages to push Tehran for nuclear concessions.

It added that Trump is expected to hold a meeting with his national security team to discuss the path of the negotiations, at a time when he affirmed his commitment to continue the naval blockade, considering it might force Iran to retreat.

This comes after a tour by the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Pakistan and Oman did not result in progress, while the proposal focuses on addressing the crisis of the strait and the blockade first, before moving to the nuclear file.

Iranian media reported on Monday that Araghchi said he would hold talks regarding bilateral relations and regional issues, including the conflict between Iran and the United States, with Russian officials during his visit to Saint Petersburg, in the last stop of a diplomatic tour that also included Pakistan and Oman.

Araghchi stated that the latest consultations in Pakistan reviewed the conditions under which talks between Iran and the United States could resume, emphasizing that Tehran will seek to secure its rights and national interests weeks after the conflict.

He also said that Iran and Oman, both overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, agreed to continue consultations at the expert level to ensure safe passage and protect mutual interests in the waterway.

Axios quoted a White House spokesperson saying that these are sensitive diplomatic discussions, and the United States will not negotiate through the media, confirming that Washington will not allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon and that any agreement must first serve the interests of the American people.

The spokesperson added that the American president sees that the United States is the decision maker and will only make an agreement that serves its interests.

The site quoted an American official saying that the Iranian proposal aims to overcome differences within the Iranian leadership regarding the extent of nuclear concessions required.

Sources also reported that the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarified to the mediators the lack of consensus within the Iranian leadership concerning Washington's demands related to enriched uranium.
