The Cabinet, in its session held on Sunday chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved the justifying reasons for the amended system project for wholesale markets of vegetables and fruits for the year 2026.

The system project aims to enhance the regulatory role of the local administration and agriculture ministries over wholesale markets, and to regulate the trading operations of horticultural products; ensuring the rights of farmers and consumers alike, and securing a balance in the prices of agricultural products.

The system project enables municipalities to establish joint markets, which ensures improved agricultural services and increased efficiency in the marketing of national products, as well as granting the right for one or more municipalities to partner to establish a wholesale market within the boundaries of one of them, provided that the management mechanism, contribution ratios, financial resource shares, and collected fees are determined by an official agreement concluded between the concerned municipalities.

These amendments will alleviate the financial burdens and operational costs on municipalities, especially those unable to establish standalone markets, contributing to unifying efforts to serve the agricultural sector and providing a regulated environment for selling products.

The decision also supports farmers by offering them opportunities to promote their products within official markets, regulating random selling operations, in addition to providing new job opportunities and improving the financial resources of the municipalities.

The new amendments improve the management mechanisms within central markets, aligning with the economic modernization vision in the agricultural sector, enhancing food security, developing the market infrastructure, and increasing the marketing efficiency of national agricultural products.

With the new amendments, modern monitoring tools will be activated, and the operation of entities within the markets will be regulated; contributing to the reduction of price distortions and ensuring transparency in commercial dealings within the wholesale markets across the various provinces of the kingdom.
