Jordans Exports to Syria Rise by 417 in Two Months

Khaberni  - National exports to Syria, during the first two months of this year, saw a jump of over 41.7% compared to the same period of the last year, according to the General Statistics Department.

The value of national exports to Syria during the first two months of last year reached 51 million dinars, compared to 36 million dinars for the same period of the last year, according to Al-Ghad.

Jordan exports several products to Syria, most importantly building materials (such as cement, wood, tiles, paints, tanks) as well as adhesives, fabrics, cleaning materials, canning materials, glass products, solar panels, and food products.

Regarding imports, foreign trade figures indicate that the Kingdom's imports from Syria decreased during the first two months of this year by 50%, reaching 4 million dinars compared to 8 million dinars for the same period of last year.

Jordan imports many goods from Syria, including varieties of fruits, electrical appliances, food items, and medical, surgical or laboratory sterilization devices.

Based on official figures, the trade balance (difference between exports and imports) saw a surplus in favor of Jordan amounting to 47 million dinars.

Trade volume between Jordan and Syria increased by 25% during the first two months of this year compared to the same period of the year before last, according to the figures issued by the General Statistics Department.

According to official foreign trade figures, the trade value (exports and imports) between the two countries until the end of February (February) of this year reached about 55 million dinars, compared to 44 million dinars for the same period last year.

Jordan and Syria, during the last year, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish and activate the Supreme Coordination Council, aimed at enhancing fraternal cooperation between the two countries in many fields, especially fundamental ones, such as trade, transport, energy, and health.

During the second week of this month, the Kingdom hosted the second session of the Supreme Coordination Council between Jordan and Syria, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi, and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Assad Al-Shibani, with participation from 30 ministers from both countries.

Jordan and Syria also agreed, at the end of last year and during official talks held in Damascus, to open import and export channels between the countries for all goods, based on the principle of reciprocal treatment during this year, which will enhance trade volume and provide greater opportunities for the public and private sectors in both countries.

It is noteworthy that the trade exchange between the two countries used to exceed 800 million dinars before the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, but sharply declined to reach only 56 million dinars in the year 2020, after the implementation of the "Caesar Law".

It should be mentioned that since 2020, the United States began imposing a series of sanctions on Syria under the name "Caesar Law", targeting all Syrian and foreign companies and individuals that deal with the Syrian government in military or oil fields or related to reconstruction, which posed a significant challenge for Jordanian companies wishing to deal with their Syrian counterparts.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump signed, at the end of last year, a decision to repeal the Caesar Law which imposed U.S. sanctions on Syria during the rule of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad.
