The Republic of Honduras announced the suspension of its recognition of what is called the "Sahrawi Republic," in a new step reflecting shifts in the stances of several countries concerning this file.
The Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Aguero de Corrales, informed this decision to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, through an official letter received today, Wednesday.
The Honduran official explained that this decision is part of a sovereign policy of her country, based on the principles of non-intervention and respect for the internal affairs of countries.
Honduras also renewed, in the same letter, its support for the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his Personal Envoy, aiming to reach a fair and lasting political solution, along with its endorsement of Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2797.
In the same context, this decision was informed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
It is worth noting that Honduras had recognized the so-called "Sahrawi Republic" in 1989 before reaffirming this recognition again in 2022.
This decision marks the sixth withdrawal of recognition during the last two years, in the context of an ongoing dynamic observed in the Moroccan Sahara file.
