US crude rises despite Washington extending the ceasefire with Iran

Khaberni - US crude futures rose in early trading on Wednesday, despite Washington's announcement of an indefinite ceasefire extension with Iran, amidst ongoing uncertainty surrounding peace talks and the almost complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose to $90.70 a barrel, trading up 59 cents, or 0.7%, at $90.26 by 22:15 GMT.

US crude contracts rose 2.8% on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump said he would extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, just hours before its expiration, to allow the two countries to continue peace talks to end a war that has claimed thousands of lives and shaken the global economy.

Trump's announcement appeared unilateral, and it was not immediately clear whether Iran, or Washington's ally Israel, would agree to extend the ceasefire that began two weeks ago.

Trump also said the US Navy’s blockade of Iranian ports and coastlines would continue, an action Tehran's leaders described as an act of war.

Navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which typically sees around 20% of the global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through, was significantly halted on Tuesday, with shipping data indicating that only three ships passed through the waterway in 24 hours.
