Khaberni - Egyptian media reported that a large number of citizens have been researching the reasons behind the spread of flies in Cairo and Giza over the past few days, as residential areas have witnessed a noticeable increase in fly infestation.
Concerning the reasons for the flies' proliferation in Cairo and Giza, a number of environmental and agricultural experts have disclosed the real factors behind this, affirming that the phenomenon is seasonal but exacerbated by certain daily behaviors.
The Secretary General of the Arab Environmental Experts Union, Dr. Magdy Allam, explained that climate changes are the main factor behind the increase in fly populations, noting that the disruption of the four seasons and the clear disappearance of spring and autumn have led to prolonged periods of high temperatures, creating an ideal environment for insect breeding.
He added that the accumulation of garbage and daily waste without proper disposal enhances the spread of flies, as these wastes provide a fertile environment for laying eggs and growing larvae, especially under high temperature conditions.
He emphasized that the summer season might witness an "explosion" in the numbers of flies due to suitable climatic conditions, despite efforts in sanitation, urging citizens to adhere to disposing of trash in designated places and not leaving it exposed.
Regarding the reason for the spread of flies in homes, Dr. Mohamed Fahim, head of the Climate Change Information Center at the Ministry of Agriculture, pointed out that what happens is not an exceptional phenomenon, explaining that this transitional period between spring and summer annually witnesses intense activity of flies and mosquitoes, due to the end of the cooling effect that inhibited their breeding.
He clarified that the spread of flies is linked to several daily factors, foremost among them negligence in cleanliness and leaving food residuals exposed, as flies are strongly attracted to strong odors and organic materials.
Also, leaving garbage inside the home for long periods or not cleaning trash bins regularly leads to attracting insects, in addition to the presence of openings or cracks in windows and doors that facilitate the entry of flies indoors.
He confirmed that flies are not only attracted to waste but also to ripe fruits and sugary drinks, making them a constant guest in unorganized kitchens.
