Rising Fuel Prices Due to Iran War Increases Cost of LongHaul Flights

Khaberni - The Transport and Environment Group mentioned that the disruption of global oil supplies due to the Iran war has led to an increase in the prices of long-haul flights from Europe by more than $100, a cost that is likely to lead to higher travel ticket prices.

The group, active in the field of climate change, stated that rising jet fuel prices have resulted in an increase in the average fuel cost by 88 euros ($104) per passenger on long-haul flights departing from Europe, and 29 euros on flights within Europe.

Their analysis compared prices as of April 16 with those prevailing before the beginning of the American-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.

According to the group's estimates, in their analysis published on Tuesday, the cost of jet fuel for a flight from Barcelona to Berlin will increase by 26 euros per passenger, while the long-haul flight from Paris to New York will see an additional fuel cost of 129 euros.

European airlines are preparing for a challenging spring and summer season, as jet fuel prices have risen to over $100 per barrel since the beginning of the war with Iran, and there are concerns that the fuel shortage could lead to flight cancellations.

The European Union is scheduled to respond on Wednesday by issuing guidelines on managing limited supplies of jet fuel.

Airline executives, including from Lufthansa, Ryanair, and Air France, stated in March that they are likely to pass on the increased fuel costs to consumers if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for a longer period.

The Transport and Environment Group said their calculations showed that the additional costs arising from the increased fuel prices were much greater than the costs faced by airlines to comply with European Union policies on climate change.

The group called on airlines to reconsider some of the European Union's climate-related policies, including the directive issued for 2030 on the use of eco-friendly jet fuel, as well as reviewing upcoming carbon pricing rules.

As part of its package of measures, the European Union is expected to seek energy independence by increasing investments in green jet fuel.
