Khaberni - Prime Minister Jafar Hassan witnessed on Tuesday the signing of the final legal and technical agreement for the National Carrier Project, paving the way for the financial closure in July next.
The project's capital cost is estimated at about $4.3 billion, with the total cost reaching approximately $5.8 billion, including financing costs, in preparation for the financial closure next July and the commencement of construction works next summer.
The Jordanian National Carrier Project is the first of its kind globally, as it integrates several strategic pillars, including the desalination of 300 million cubic meters of sea water annually, and pumping systems reaching heights of up to 1100 meters above sea level through pipes that extend for about 450 kilometers, along with a heavy reliance on renewable energy according to the latest environmentally friendly technologies.
The project is expected to supply about 40% of the Kingdom's drinking water needs, with water pumping to start in 2030, making it a key contributor to enhancing national water security. The annual water supply it will provide is nearly equivalent to the total capacity of all the Kingdom's dams and three times what the Disi project produces.
This volume will help increase the water supply rate in the Kingdom to 40% from its current levels and double the annual per capita water share from 60 to 110 cubic meters, in addition to increasing the number of water supply days from one day to three days weekly across various provinces of the Kingdom.
