Khaberni - The softness and brightness of old towels can be easily restored with a simple and effective trick, according to cleaning experts.
With repeated use, detergent residues, hard water, and fabric softeners accumulate within the towel fibers, negatively affecting their ability to absorb water, as reported by Real Simple.
Cleaning expert Scott Schroeder explains that this problem often occurs due to the excessive use of detergents or relying on the dryer with every wash. He also points out that drying towels at high temperatures can damage the fibers, making them rough and reducing their efficiency.
Cleaning expert Isabella Flores states that old and worn towels gradually lose their ability to absorb due to the thinning and flattening of their fibers over time.
Baking soda and vinegar
Kathy Rast, founder of a sleepwear brand, explains that some simple ingredients found in the kitchen can remove these deposits and restore the towels' softness and absorption capacity. She advises washing the towels at the highest temperature they can withstand, according to care instructions, adding just one cup of vinegar without using any detergents.
Afterward, the washing process should be repeated using half a cup of baking soda. Rast affirms that this step helps eliminate unpleasant odors and get rid of any vinegar residues. She also warns of the importance of not using fabric softeners during this process, ensuring that the towels are thoroughly rinsed to remove any traces of vinegar or baking soda.
For soft towels
To keep towels in good condition for as long as possible, it is advised to follow the care instructions on the label and to avoid over-drying them. Rast explains that high heat and constant tumbling inside the dryer weaken the fibers, causing them to lose their natural elasticity, moisture, and softness.
She recommends drying towels at a medium temperature, then removing them while they are still slightly damp and allowing them to air dry until completely dry. She confirms that following these steps significantly helps preserve towel quality and extends their usage life.
