Grossi Any agreement between Washington and Tehran without the agency is an illusion

Khaberni - On Monday, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stated that any agreement between the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran without the involvement of the international agency would be "an illusion".

Grossi confirmed in an interview with the British newspaper "Telegraph" that any agreement without the international agency would be "worthless", adding: "Without verification, an agreement is not an agreement; it's an illusion of an agreement or just a promise that you do not know whether it will be adhered to or not."

He also confirmed that the International Atomic Energy Agency "will be able to confirm and verify that what they agree upon is indeed what happens," adding: "We know Iran well, and all the facilities, and we are the only entity that can ensure complete transparency in operations."

Regarding his vision for a potential agreement between Tehran and Washington, Grossi confirmed that the deal might include Iran's commitment to reduce its enriched uranium and ship the rest to a third country, as occurred in the 2015 agreement.

While discussing uranium extraction, Grossi pointed to safety-related risks, suggesting that there might be problems in the structural integrity of the nuclear facilities that were bombed.

On another note, Grossi confirmed that the renewed discussion about the possession of nuclear weapons in Poland, South Korea, and Japan could put the world in a "very fragile situation".

Regarding the Chinese nuclear program, Grossi affirmed that the steady growth of this program is concerning.

Grossi reiterated his warnings that North Korea represents "an increasing threat" to global stability due to its secretive expansion of its nuclear weapons program.

Concerning the situation in Syria, Grossi mentioned that he is working on removing Syria from the list of potential concerns at the agency.

He confirmed that he collaborates with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar'a after United Nations inspectors found nuclear material from an undeclared weapons program, suspected to have been sought by the previous regime.

Grossi confirmed that "the main concerns have disappeared", but there are "some indicators and information that we need to verify", referring to the ongoing dialogue with Syria about those materials.
