As summer approaches How do you get rid of foot calluses

Khaberni - As the "open shoe season" approaches, experts shed light on foot calluses or "callosities" as a natural defense mechanism for skin against friction, although they can become painful or undesirable if left untreated.

According to podiatrists and dermatologists, these thick layers typically form on the heels, tips of the toes, and soles of the feet due to wearing uncomfortable shoes, walking barefoot, or engaging in intense physical activity.

How do you get rid of them?

To safely remove these calluses, experts recommend a gentle treatment process that takes two to four weeks, starting by soaking the feet in warm water or dealing with them right after showering to moisturize the skin and facilitate removal.

Afterward, the area is gently smoothed using a pumice stone or nail file, with a caution against using sharp tools like "cheese graters" that can cause cuts and infections, as the goal is to smooth the skin, not completely remove it.

Specialists recommend the use of moisturizing creams containing "urea" with concentrations ranging from 10% to 40%, for their effective role in breaking down the hard outer layer, and it is preferable to wear socks after applying the cream to ensure moisture absorption.

Also, be cautious of chemical foot scrubs that may contain alcohol which can cause drying and irritation instead of treating the thick calluses.

For prevention, the focus should be on reducing friction by wearing supportive and fitting shoes, using adhesive callous pads, and avoiding walking barefoot even inside the house.

Experts emphasize the importance of consulting a doctor if the pain becomes severe or if there is bleeding, or if the condition does not improve, especially since some of these growths may be warts or skin tumors.

People with diabetes or impaired nerves should always consult a doctor before attempting home treatment to avoid unnoticed injuries.
