Khaberni - The President of the Sudan Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, this Sunday welcomed the defection of the leading figure, Major General Al-Nur Al-Kubba, from the Rapid Support Forces to the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted Burhan as saying, "The doors are wide open for anyone who wants to lay down arms and join the national building efforts."
This happened during Burhan's reception of Major General Al-Kubba—who leads the Sudanese army—at the Northern State, according to a statement from the Sovereignty Council.
Major General Al-Kubba arrived in the city of Dongola in the Northern State coming from the locality of Kutum in North Darfur, in one of the largest splits in the Rapid Support Forces after the defection of the commander of the Sudanese Forces Shield, Abu Aqla Kekil, in October 2024, according to local media.
Al-Kubba is one of the founders of the Rapid Support Forces and has played a remarkable role in the April 2023 war, where he was one of the prominent leaders participating in the battles of Al Fasher in North Darfur.
At the beginning of April this year, Al-Kubba defected from the Rapid Support Forces due to "disputes arising from his discontent with not being chosen as a military commander of North Darfur after taking control of Al Fasher on October 26, 2025, in addition to the neglect of his forces and their discriminatory treatment against them," according to Sudanese media.
Sudanese military sources said that elements loyal to Al-Kubba managed to secure his exit with about 46 combat vehicles from his town until he reached areas near Tine in extreme western North Darfur, and then took the desert road towards northern Sudan.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been at war since mid-April 2023, encompassing 13 out of 18 states and resulting in over 20,000 deaths and approximately 10 million displaced people and refugees, according to the United Nations.
